Linlithgow MSP, Fiona Hyslop is taking on the role of chieftain of the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow this weekend.
The two-day event at Glasgow Green featured many young up-and-coming talents including West Lothian Schools Pipe Band.
Of the 8000 competitors up to 30 per cent were said to be under the age of 25 - showing that pipes and drums are still thriving across the generations.
Hyslop was invited to be chieftain of the World Pipe Band Championships in recognition of her passionate support of pipe band music and its development around the world.
She said: “Pipe band music sits at the very heart of Scotland’s culture and communities, celebrated the length and breadth of the country, and I’m heartened to see so many young people continuing this vibrant tradition.
“I have the greatest respect for all the tutors and volunteers who dedicate their time throughout the year to nurturing young talent.
“I would also like to pay tribute to the work of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association and to extend a warm welcome to all the international bands for the commitment they make to travel across the world to attend one of the star events in Scotland’s cultural calendar.”
West Lothian Schools Pipe Band was formed in 2011 by Pipe Major Gordon Bruce. Initially the band performed at events in and around West Lothian but soon began to participate in pipe band competitions and today are renowned across Britain.
