MSP delighted to support Poppyscotland's 'Light Up Red' campaign

Central Scotland list MSP Meghan Gallacher has spoken of her pride supporting the Poppyscotland ‘Light Up Red’ 2021 campaign.

The national campaign invites buildings large and small to ‘Light Up Red’ in support of the Scottish Poppy Appeal and each year the campaign is used to raise awareness.

This campaign is even more important due to the massive impact COVID has had on Poppyscotland’s ability to run street collections.

This year holds special significance as it is the 100 year anniversary of the Poppy as the national symbol of Remembrance.

Meghan brought forward a motion which asked that the Scottish Parliament and Bute House should ‘Light Up Red’ to show its support for the campaign and our veteran community.

Ms Gallacher said: “I am delighted that my motion to Parliament has been successful in securing such tremendous cross party support.

“It further illustrates just how important charities, such as Poppyscotland, are, and of course anything I can do to assist our veteran community in Scotland is an honour.

“The Light Up Red initiative has been a successful campaign for many years and I felt it was important that the Scottish Parliament lent its weight to the campaign by committing to light up Scottish Parliament and Bute House.”

Fraser Bedwell from the charity said: “The parliamentary motion helps to raise the profile of this important initiative further and we hope it inspires many other landmarks to take part this year.

“We already have in excess of 100 locations lighting red in the coming days, ranging from castles to control towers, and we hope this will act as a very visual reminder of the importance of the Scottish Poppy Appeal and the continued need to support our Armed Forces community.”
