MSE shares whether it's cheaper to use heating on low all day or just when you need it

As we all try to save as much money as possible on our energy bills amid the cost of living crisis, you could find yourself googling hacks to cut your bills down.

However, one age-old debate is about whether it's cheaper to use your heating on a low level all day or cheaper to use it just when you need it to warm your home up.

Fortunately, the experts at MoneySavingExpert.com, the website founded by Martin Lewis, have myth-busted the argument once and for all with advice and tips from the Energy Saving Trust.

According to EST, the idea it's cheaper to leave the heating on low all day is not true and they advise that having the heating on only when you need it will cost you less in the long run.

The best way to save energy using this method is to use a timer so that your thermostat turns your heating on and off to keep your home at the temperature you choose.

The Energy Saving Trust also says that if you're keeping the heating on all day you're losing energy all day - as a certain amount of energy is constantly leaking out of your home - so it's better to heat things up only when you need it.

However, keeping your heating on all day does have some benefits (asides from being warm all the time) - it can combat condensation in your home.

Experts at AskJeff.co.uk advocate keeping the heating on low all day, turning all radiator valves up to the max and the boiler down to the minimum - but why?

They say the problem with turning the heating on and off is that every time it's turned off, condensation collects within the walls and this can help conduct heat outside the home, they say – meaning you leak heat more quickly and so will use more energy as a result.
