MSE Martin Lewis advises TUI customers of best time of day to call for refund

MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis has spoken with TUI to find out when the best time to call is in order to secure a refund.

TUI changed its stance a few weeks ago and is now offering customers cash refunds, as opposed to just vouchers, in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Many people have seen their holidays cancelled as a result of the deadly outbreak and the travel and tourism sector has been devastated by the effects of lockdown.

But some people are still struggling to get a refund from TUI.

Speaking on the Martin Lewis Money Show, the finance guru said: "On their computerised system, if you booked online, it should be relatively easy and straightforward."

Those who booked their holiday in store may struggle though, as the system used is different which can cause problems bagging a refund online.

Martin added: "You have to give them some compassion for that, they've done it really quickly, they weren't expecting stores to close."

He explained the phone lines are especially busy in the morning and the best time to call is in the afternoon.

Martin encouraged TUI customers to try and get their refund online, but if it proves unsuccessful, try calling to speak with someone in the afternoon.

He suggested waiting until next week as lines may be very busy on Friday, June 19 following his announcement on his show.

The MoneySavingExpert also warned of a "surprising" and "bizarre" change to the government grant for the self-employed.

The next instalment of the grant will be available in August but self-employed workers now have to make a declaration, confirming their business has been adversely affected by coronavirus on or after July 14, in order to be eligible.

The money whizz dubbed the new rule a "surprise" and said: "It's just all a bit higgledy-piggledy."

The government advises the second grant is for "70% of your average monthly trading profits, paid in a single instalment covering a further three months' worth of profits, capped at £6,570 in total."

Disappointingly for many excluded from the first grant, this has the same eligibility criteria, so if you were ineligible for that, you will be ineligible for the August one.
