MS Dhoni walks out to… Will MSD play in CSK's final game at Chepauk of IPL 2026 vs SRH?

MS Dhoni walked out of the dressing room at 6:30 PM on the eve of Chennai Super Kings’ final home game of IPL 2026. The crowd inside Chepauk noticed every step.

He was padded up. He did not have a trainer beside him. And within minutes, speculation over his long-awaited return had taken over Chennai once again.

As CSK prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday in a must-win clash, the biggest talking point around the franchise has little to do with combinations, points tables or playoff calculations. One question has swallowed everything else: Will Dhoni play at Chepauk this season?

Dhoni trains at Chepauk as speculation intensifies

According to an Indian Express report, the 44-year-old began with stretching and mobility drills before waiting nearly 15 minutes to enter the nets. Once there, Dhoni batted for close to 30 minutes alongside Prashant Veer, first taking throwdowns and later facing spin bowlers.

Observers saw him clear the ropes multiple times during the session. By 7:30 PM, he had returned to the dressing room, but the brief appearance only deepened the curiosity surrounding his availability.

Dhoni has attended training sessions regularly through the season, but this one drew far greater attention because it came before Chennai’s final league game at home.

Once upon a time, Dhoni had said he hoped his last T20 appearance would come in Chennai. That comment, made in 2021, has resurfaced once more among fans desperate to see him walk out in yellow again at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

CSK’s season still alive as playoff race tightens

Chennai Super Kings are currently sixth on the table and need victories in both remaining matches to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Dhoni, however, has not featured in a single matchday squad this season. Earlier in the tournament, he missed games because of a calf injury. Later, he reportedly stayed out of selection considerations to avoid disturbing the side’s balance.

Now, with CSK fighting to stay alive in the competition, belief around a possible comeback has grown again.

The excitement has spilled beyond the ground. Ticket demand for Monday’s fixture has surged sharply, with fans rushing to secure seats for what many believe could become one of the most emotional nights Chepauk has witnessed in years. Interest across ticketing platforms and secondary markets has jumped significantly after relatively quieter phases earlier in the campaign.

Selection questions remain ahead of CSK vs SRH match

Dhoni’s extended batting session has also reignited discussion around CSK’s team combination.

For much of the season, his training involvement had largely been restricted to throwdowns. This time, he spent longer against spin and looked increasingly comfortable while attacking bowlers.

There may also be room within the XI following Jamie Overton’s departure. CSK’s overseas mix remains flexible, although the side still faces selection questions ahead of the Sunrisers game.

Akeal Hosein is unlikely to feature because of matchup considerations, while South African all-rounder Dian Forrester has joined the squad as a late option.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin added further intrigue during a video discussion, saying he had heard Dhoni had been fit for the last few games.

“I have a feeling that against Sunrisers Hyderabad, there is a good chance of MS Dhoni playing,” Ashwin said.

Pressure grows on Fleming and CSK

Beyond the Dhoni storyline, the pressure on Chennai Super Kings continues to mount.

Another failure to reach the playoffs would make this their third straight season without a knockout appearance, increasing scrutiny on the direction of the side and on head coach Stephen Fleming, who has faced rare criticism during the campaign.

Sunrisers Hyderabad also enter the match under pressure as they chase crucial qualification points in a tightly packed table.

But in Chennai, almost everything else has faded into the background.

For now, Chepauk waits to see whether Dhoni’s walk from the dressing room to the nets was merely another training session, or the first sign of one final appearance.
