Mrs Hinch fans share 44p food item that removes permanent marker from walls

If you've got young children, you've probably battled through the nightmare of finding them drawing on something they shouldn't be.

And while some arts and crafts supplies can be fairly easy to get off of your surfaces, others aren't so willing to be washed away - like permanent markers, for example.

But thankfully, fans of cleaning guru Mrs Hinch - full name Sophie Hinchliffe - have offered a helping hand to one exhausted mum facing just that problem, as they were quick to respond on their Facebook group after she pleaded for advice, Express.co.uk reports.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, the mum wrote: “My little boy has drawn all over my mum’s wall with permanent marker.

“Is there anything that can get this out?”

Group members were quick to offer the woman their support, with several revealing that the key to getting permanent marker stains off of your walls can be found in one easy-to-find kitchen item - mayonnaise.

One fellow group member said: “Mayonnaise will do the trick.”

While another explained: “I’ve been in your situation before and tried the mayonnaise trick. Bought the cheapest one I could find, 44p from Asda, and it was game-changing.

“Wouldn’t recommend using it all the time but it definitely works well.”

As the commenter stated, you can pick up mayonnaise in a 500g bottle for as little as 44p from Asda, although the branded versions from companies including Heinz and Hellmann's retail for between £1 and £3.29 depending on the size of the bottle or jar.

The mayonnaise trick works because of the condiment's oil content and high vinegar content, both of which are thought to penetrate through permanent marker stains.

Mrs Hinch fans recommended placing a scoop of mayonnaise onto the stain and rubbing it slightly before leaving for five minutes, at which point you can wipe it off with kitchen roll.

It's also best to leave the pen to dry before attempting to clean it, and care should be taken not to rub too hard as you could risk damaging the paint underneath.

Meanwhile, other fans in the Mrs Hinch group suggested using antibacterial hand gel, which you may have in abundance at home from stockpiling amid the height of the Coronavirus pandemic.

One person said: “Use hand sanitiser. Don’t rub it in, just dab.”

While another added: “Try hand sanitiser or hair spray, works well.”

Alcohol-based sanitisers work by helping to lift the stain and allowing it to be wiped off easily - and it is recommended that you cover the stain with hand sanitiser before letting it sit for 30 seconds and wiping away with a soft cloth.
