Mrs Hinch fans share £1.25 tip to banish 'terrible' smells from your washing machine

Getting rid of pungent odours from your washing machine can be an incredibly daunting task, with mould, mildew and bacteria constantly posing a threat to your sparkling white washes.

In addition, particles of oil, dirt, crumbs and hair can easily make their way into the gasket of your washer and tarnish your clean clothes with a nasty stench if left untreated - never mind eventually causing your costly-to-replace appliance to break down.

Thankfully, cleaning fans and Mrs Hinch admirers alike have given a solid solution to ousting sorry smells - and the best part is that it only set you back £1.25.

The Mirror reports that fans of Mrs Hinch - real name is Sophie Hinchcliffe - often share their home cleaning and tidying tips when people post on the Facebook group asking for advice. In a recent post, somebody posted: "My washing machine has a terrible smell, have tried washing machine cleaner, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, please help."

And within minutes, the cleaning fanatics were in the comments section with their best advice to get rid of the nasty washing machine smell, and there were many ideas on show. But the main advice people were giving was to use soda crystals.

One person, commented: "Hot wash with soda crystals, manufacturers recommendation on mine," while another fan, added: "Boil wash with two cups of soda crystals, it will clean the machine and pipes."

A third person noted: "Every wash I add soda crystals which keep the machine clean. Once the cycle is finished I put a peg on the door to stop it closing as it needs air."

Soda crystals are a fine powder that can be added to your washing machine and they can be picked up from most home stores for around £1, so you will be able to get your machine looking and smelling brand new without paying much at all. However, that was not all the suggestions as others recommended using a bleach product.

The person stated: "I clean mine once a month by putting bleach in the detergent draw and putting it on a 40/60 degree wash and just leave the door open afterwards and seems to have worked for me."

Another, stated: "Put bleach down the washing machine pipe at back of washer, it stopped smelling."
