Mrs Hinch fans rave over 65p trick to remove stains from bed sheets - and what to avoid

Waking up to find blood stains on your bedsheets is never a nice feeling, but it's one that many of us have experienced for a variety of different reasons.

On top of knowing you'll need to completely strip your bed to change your sheets, you also have to face the difficult task of trying to remove the stains to get your sheets looking good as new again - and that can sometimes be a tricky task.

But thanks to fans of cleaning guru Mrs Hinch, you don't need to throw your stained sheets away or break the bank trying out different products to remove the stains - as they claimed a 65p kitchen staple will do the trick.

In a post on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips group on Facebook, one woman asked for help removing stains from her bedsheets, and people were quick to tell her that all she needs to do is dissolve some salt in cold water and soak the sheets in the mixture.

One person said: "Soak in cold water and lots of salt."

While another added: "Soak them in cold water with salt, my mum always did [this] and it works."

But commenters also told her she should avoid using hot water to clean the stains, as that will set the stain and make it even harder to remove.

Someone explained: "Soak in cold salty water before washing. Hot water will set the stain."

Cleaning fans suggested that once the sheets have been soaked, they should be washed at a "low temperature", again to keep the stain from being set by too much heat.

If you don't want to use salt though, there were other options given including using milk, washing detergent, and washing-up liquid - with all of them advocating the use of cold water instead of hot.

One person suggested: "Cold water, washing liquid neat and scrub before putting it into the washing machine."

While another wrote: "Soak in milk then wash in cold water."

The tips should help clean a variety of stains, as blood stains are particularly difficult to remove because of their clotting properties. The haemoglobin in the blood helps heal wounds, but it also makes it harder to remove stains as the blood binds to the fabric on your sheets.
