Mrs Hinch fans rave about £1 item that banishes 'terrible' washing machine smells

Getting rid of a nasty smell from a washing machine can be one of the toughest cleaning jobs as mould, mildew and bacteria can creep up on you. On top of that, when you wash your clothes any body oil, dirt and hair can find its way into the gasket of your machine and create quite the stench if left untended over a long period of time.

Thankfully, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have answered all your washing machine prayers as they have revealed a neat tip to getting rid of washing machine odour, and the best bit is it only costs £1.25.

Fans of Mrs Hinch , whose real name is Sophie Hinchcliffe, often share their home cleaning and tidying tips when people post on the Facebook group asking for advice.

In a recent post, somebody posted: "My washing machine has a terrible smell, have tried washing machine cleaner, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, please help."

Within minutes the cleaning fanatics were in the comments with their best advice to get rid of the nasty washing machine smell, and there were many ideas on show.

But the main advice people were giving was to use soda crystals.

One person commented: "Hot wash with soda crystals, manufacturers recommendation on mine."

While another fan added: "Boil wash with two cups of soda crystals, it will clean the machine and pipes."

A third person noted: "Every wash I add soda crystals which keep the machine clean. Once the cycle is finished I put a peg on the door to stop it closing as it needs air."

Soda crystals are a fine white powder that can be added to your washing machine and they can be picked up from most home stores for around £1 so you will be able to get your machine looking and smelling brand new without paying much at all.

However, that was not all the suggestions as others recommended using a bleach product.

The person stated: "I clean mine once a month by putting bleach in the detergent draw and putting it on a 40/60 degree wash and just leave the door open afterwards and seems to have worked for me."

While another stated: "Put bleach down the washing machine pipe at back of washer, it stopped smelling."
