Mrs Hinch fans hail 59p cupboard staple that whitens discoloured towels 'overnight'

If you have white towels in your bathroom, then you'll know how much of a pain they can be to clean - especially when they're prone to picking up dirt and make-up stains.

But according to fans of cleaning queen Mrs Hinch - real name Sophie Hinchliffe - there's an easy way to get your white towels looking brighter than ever in just one wash, using only common household ingredients.

The cleaning fans said you can use bicarbonate of soda, also known as baking soda, to bring the brightness back to your towels - and it only costs 59p to buy.

Cleaning fans banded together on a Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips group on Facebook to help one user who asked: "How do you get white towels whiter?"

Many of them suggested simply adding half a cup of baking soda to the wash along with your usual detergent.

One person said: "Add half to one cup of baking soda to the load along with your detergent."

While another suggested also adding vinegar, as they wrote: "Vinegar and baking soda in the wash in hot water. Wash then cold rinse. I put a squeeze of lemon juice in the rinse. Makes them smell good and helps get the baking soda off the surface of the washer as well."

Other commenters, however, suggested a different product to help brighten towels - Napisan.

Napisan is a "germicidal in-wash stain remover with active oxygen" that claims to remove germs and stains even at low temperatures and is often used by parents to clean babies' clothing.

Someone suggested: "Just like you did with terry nappies soak overnight in Napisan then wash at 60°C."

Another cleaning fan agreed, writing: "Napisan does the trick. It's usually in the baby section in supermarkets as it's for washing nappies. But great for anything white."

While a third said: "Wash with Napisan!"

Napisan is available at most supermarkets and can be found in 800g boxes for £4.20 from the likes of Morrisons, Sainsbury's, and Tesco. The product is exactly £5 from Ocado but can be found for just £3.20 at Wilko.

Meanwhile, one mum recently revealed that a clean towel could help you save money on your energy bills - as you can use it to cut down the time it takes for your washing to dry.

Carolina McCauley said that all you need to do is add a clean towel to your tumble dryer along with your wet clothes from the washing machine, and the towel will help to soak up some of the moisture from your wash.

After 15 minutes, take the towel out so your tumble dryer doesn't work overtime trying to dry it - and the rest of your washing will be dry in no time.
