Mrs Doubtfire musical finally being adapted for Broadway

Robin Williams in his iconic role with co-star Sally Field ( )

Comedy film Mrs Doubtfire is finally being adapted as a Broadway musical.

Kevin McCollum and Bob Cohen of Fox Stage Productions confirmed their plans for the new project in a joint statement which said: "Mrs Doubtfire is such a beloved story, both laugh-out-loud hilarious and extremely moving. Getting this team together and crafting Mrs Doubtfire for the stage has been pure joy. We can’t wait to get into production.”

John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick, both Tony Award nominees, will write the script, and O'Farrell will also compose the music and lyrics with American songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick. Four time Emmy Award-winner Jerry Zaks has been confirmed as director. The cast for the musical will be announced at a later date and the production schedule is yet to be finalised.

The stage adaption will be based on the 1993 film starring the late Robin Williams, who took his own life in 2014 aged 63. The film saw Williams as Daniel Hillard, a struggling voice actor who disguises himself as a Scottish nanny so he can spend time with his children following a split from his wife Miranda (Sally Field).

Based on the 1987 book Madame Doubtfire by author Anne Fine, the film was a commercial and critical success, grossing £345 million worldwide and winning an Oscar for Best Makeup. Williams won a Golden Globe for his performance, and the film also scored a Golden Globe for Best Picture.
