Mrs Browns Boys win NTA for Best Comedy but viewers are not impressed

Viewers were left angry by the winner of the Best Comedy at the NTAs on Tuesday night, so much so that it quickly became one of the top trends on Twitter.

Award shows always generate lots of opinions on who should win what and one of the results that prompted the most outrage in the aftermath of the O2 Arena ceremony was the outcome of the comedy category.

Bookies had tipped Ricky Gervais' Afterlife to triumph, while there was also plenty of support for new shows Fleabag, Sex Education and Derry Girls but in the end it was Mrs Brown's Boys that won once again - a result that did not go down well at all with many people watching the live coverage of the awards at home, with a sea of furious tweets, GIFs and memes.

One angry viewer tweeted "Afterlife, Fleabag, Sex Education and Derry Girls all lost to Mrs Browns boys? Is that a joke," and, in agreement, another reacted "Fleabag can storm America and win three Emmys, but still the people of Britain give the #NTAs for Best Comedy to Mrs Browns Boys."

And, following the same train of thought, others said that once again proved that British people can't be trusted in a public vote.

One vexed viewer posted "Mrs Browns Boys winning ahead of Afterlife and Fleabag is proof that the British public can’t be trusted to vote," and another, using capitals to express their rage, tweeted "FLEABAG, SEX EDUCATION, AFTER LIFE AND DERRY GIRLS LOSING TO MRS BROWNS BOYS IS THE REASON WHY THE BRITISH PUBLIC SHOULDNT BE ALLOWED TO VOTE FOR THINGS."

There was some love for Mrs Brown's Boys on social media though. One thrilled fan reacted to the win by posting "All yall young ones moaning about #MrsBrownsBoys winning, need to learn what proper old school comedy is

and YES I voted for it. LOVE mrs brown."
