Fans of the BBC smash Mrs Brown’s Boys will be thrilled to hear it could be back on our screens for a Christmas special.
The comedy’s creator Brendan O’Carroll had previously suggested a 2020 show would be unlikely.
But sources tell me Beeb bosses are “almost over the line” when it comes to getting the Irish comic back as Mrs Brown.
O’Carroll’s planned live shows for 2020 were axed due to coronavirus but insiders say he is keen to give fans a Christmas gift after getting through a tough year.
A source reveals: “The BBC agreed with Brendan on bringing some joy to Christmas. It is great news and will bring cheer to many viewers.
“Brendan too can have a field day trying to bring humour about life with Covid, all while bringing his amazing gags to the world.”
Insiders say the agreement hinges on the cast and crew being happy with the social distancing rules enforced on set.
“The deal is agreed,” the source adds. “They just need to cover concerns about health and safety surrounding the full cast, and the timings, and it should be golden.”
The festive special will be a boost for the BBC, which is thought to be struggling to fill its Covid-damaged Christmas schedule with new programming.
Beeb executives face the embarrassment of screening repeats on the big family days during yuletide after its production plans were severely impacted by the pandemic.
Last Christmas, O’Carroll, 65, told the broadcaster there would be no more Mrs Brown’s Boys unless execs came up with “phone number
” figures.
But with his stage show still on hold for now, it’s looking more likely that he will reprise his role as the loudmouthed Irish matriarch.
In December, he revealed he would “never say never” to recording a new
six-part series of the comedy smash.
