Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas special script tweaked 'in case the Queen died before the show aired'

Mrs Brown's Boys' Christmas special went through some last-minute script tweaks - in case the Queen died before the show aired.

Brendan O'Carroll, who pens and stars in the series as the titular Agnes Brown, revealed that the BBC wanted a segment changed just in case.

The special, which will air on Christmas Day and again on New Year's Day, sees a segment in which Agnes delivers an alternative to the traditional Queen's Speech.

Brendan recalled that he was told to tread carefully after presenting the scripts to bosses back in January.

"I replied, 'Why? Are you afraid of offending the Queen? Sure you only have to look at what The Crown is doing!'" he told The Irish Sun.

"[The BBC] said suppose something happens to the Queen, before Christmas comes.

"If we put that bit in the main body of the show, then we may have to scrap the show. I went, 'Wow, you're right!'"

The Christmas and New Year specials come hot on the heels of a new deal between Brendan and the Beeb.

He signed on the dotted line in an agreement that secures him Christmas specials of the comedy until at least 2026.

"This new deal we signed last week goes all the way to 2026," proud Brendan shared, "which means I will be able to grow into the part, and we've a clause in which guarantees Mrs Brown is aired at 10pm on Christmas night, or else we don't have to make it.

"I wanted that because if it's not good enough for Christmas Day."

And Brendan noted that he's held the premium slot for nine years, more than even comic heroes Morecambe and Wise had.

The cast, which includes Brendan's daughter Fiona and son Danny, had rehearsed this year's specials over Zoom, before meeting in Glasgow to film.

And the cast and crew ensured the set was kept Covid safe with daily tests for everyone.

The specials will grapple with the impact of the pandemic, as well as a break-in at the family home.

Mrs Brown's Boys airs at 10pm on both Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
