MRI on Anthony Davis (thumb) comes back clean

The alarms that went off when Anthony Davis left Saturday morning’s game against the Brooklyn Nets in China with a thumb injury can finally go silent across Lakers Nation.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that an MRI on Davis’ sprained right thumb came back clean, supporting the initial diagnosis from the Lakers that it was only a Grade 1 sprain. There had been some social media rumors indicating that the Lakers were fearing a similar injury to the one suffered by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, but those have turned out to be premature and inaccurate.

The Lakers dodged a serious nightmare start to their season with the news that Davis’ MRI came back clean. The Lakers are already facing enough of an uphill battle to get their bodies and routines back to normal after a bizarre week in China, adding a Davis injury, even for a few weeks, would be devastating for them even against a soft early-season schedule.

The Lakers are back on the court tonight against the Golden State Warriors at Staples Center, but neither Davis nor LeBron James are expected to suit up less than 48 hours after arriving stateside from China.
