Mr Selfridge loses out in ratings to Last Tango in Halifax

ITV drama Mr Selfridge opened its doors for a third series attracting 3.8 million viewers on Sunday night, a fall of more than a million viewers compared to last season’s opening episode.

The department store drama managed a 15.3% share of total viewing between 9pm and 10pm.

Last season’s opening episode of Mr Selfridge attracted 4.9m viewers.

Mr Selfridge struggled against the penultimate episode of BBC1’s Last Tango in Halifax, which drew an average of 6.3 million viewers and a 25.8% share of viewing.

It was a strong night for BBC1 with the final episode of Still Open All Hours drew 7.8 million and a 34% share of viewing between 7.30pm and 8pm.

David Jason’s comedy was followed by drama Call the Midwife which drew an average of 9 million viewers and a 34.5% share between 8pm and 9pm.

On BBC2 the return of Top Gear, for its 22nd series, managed an ever reliable 5.3 million viewers and a 20% share of total viewing between 8pm and 9pm.

In the 8pm slot, Channel 4’s The Hotel managed 1.3 million viewers and a 4.9% share of viewing. At 9pm, the final of Levison Wood’s four parter, Walking the Nile, managed 2.1 million and an 8.6% share from 9pm to 10pm.

Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother beat the best of the rest in Sunday evening’s 9pm slot with 2.8 million viewers giving the show an 11.3% share.

All ratings are Barb overnight figures, including live, +1 (except for BBC channels) and same day timeshifted (recorded) viewing, but excluding on demand, or other – unless otherwise stated.
