Christina Ricci hung around. Jude Law didn't. And George Clooney never got within hollering distance. Welcome to the world of the "waparazzi".
The wap-a-what? It's wap meets paparazzi, citizen journalists armed with mobile phones who were out in force at last night's Bafta film awards. Well, it is sponsored by Orange.
But professional snappers need not feel overly intimidated, if my experience is anything to go by. A combination of the weather, awful lighting, and film stars reluctant to get wetter than they already were played havoc with the capability of even the latest mobile phone technology.
Movie stars are accustomed to seeing banks of snappers lying in wait next to the red carpet. Indeed, they thrive on it. But two dozen film fans holding up mobile phones had the opposite reaction last night. "Look at all those mobile phones!" said one actor, who looked unnerved and intimidated in equal measure.
Harry Potter star Rupert Grint took one look and scarpered, although that may have had something to do with one of my fellow waparazzi repeatedly bellowing "Rupert!" in his face.
Wannabe "waps" should also try reading Hollywood Reporter every once in a while. Yelling "Mr Ang! Mr Ang!" at Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee was never going to get his attention.
Confusing Radio 1 film critic Mark Kermode with Mark Lamarr was rather more forgivable.
They could also try pinching a few of the tactics of the die-hard autograph hunter. "Austria. Been here since 5.30am," said one notice hung over the railings. Let's hope it was worth it.
