MPs want compensation for NHS heroes who die battling coronavirus

Compensation should be paid to the families of doctors and other frontline workers who die due to coronavirus, Boris Johnson has been told.

MPs want people who lose their lives because of their work fighting the virus to be treated like members of the armed forces who are killed.

City of Durham MP Mary Foy is one of 50 MPs who have written to the Prime Minister to say: "Those on the frontline of this battle against coronavirus are heroes".

The cross-party campaign is also supported by Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs. It was started by Layla Moran, who is standing to become next leader of the Lib Dems.

They say that the families of professionals "putting themselves in harms way to protect us all".

It would follow the model of compensation currently paid to the families of members of the armed forces who are killed. They receive a lump sum, a guaranteed income and child payments for eligible children under 18.

Three medical workers in the UK have diedin recent days.. Dr Adil El Tayar, 63, died on 25 March at West Middlesex University Hospital in Isleworth, London.

Southend GP Dr Habib Zaidi, 76, died after being taken to hospital with suspected coronavirus.

Dr Amged El-Hawrani, 55, a hospital consultant, died in Leicester Royal Infirmary on 29 March after testing positive for Covid-19.

The MPs do not state exactly who they believe should receive compensation, but medical workers who put themselves at risk of infection would clearly be included. Their letter leaves open the possibility of other people also being included in the scheme.

It says: "While no money could ever compensate for any loss of life, setting up this scheme would provide security and comfort for those risking their lives at this time of crisis."
