MPs vote to stop future Prime Minister from suspending Parliament to force No Deal through

MPs have voted through a bid to stop Boris Johnson suspending parliament to force through a no deal Brexit .

The Commons backed the Benn-Burt amendment which will make it more difficult for the next Prime Minister to force through a no deal.

The amendment was approved by 315 votes to 274, a majority of 41.

The frontrunner in the Tory Party leadership race, Boris Johnson has refused to rule out suspending Westminster before October 31.

Today's amendment will force Parliament to meet - in theory to discuss unrelated issues about Northern Ireland - even if it has been prorogued.

Several Tories backed the amendment with at least one minister, Margot James, resigning from the Government to support it while other ministers abstained.

The amendment is not an outright ban on suspending Parliament, but will make it much more difficult to do so.

Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer tweeted: "For Boris Johnson to try to shut down Parliament to force through a destructive 'no deal' Brexit would be a constitutional outrage.

"Now it would also be unlawful. A huge victory."
