MPs to decide amount of overseas aid

MPs are today being given the chance to vote on raising overseas financial aid to its previous level.

The nation's outlay on international development was cut from 0.7 per cent of national income to 0.5 per cent in response to increased spending during the Covid-19 pandemic, a decrease of around £4bn.

The move, announced in November, tied overseas expenditure to national borrowing and debt.

Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg told MPs yesterday (Monday) that there would be a general debate on the issue.

He said: "It will be a yes or no answer. Does this House wish to see the public finances kept under reasonable control? Does it recognise there are limits to what we can do?"
