MPs reject all Brexit alternatives AGAIN as impasse continues

MPs have rejected all four Brexit alternatives tabled for the second round of the indicative vote process on Monday evening.

The House of Commons had grabbed back control of the Brexit process in order to find a majority for an alternative way forward that could break the parliamentary over Prime Minister Theresa May's proposed deal.

However, like on Thursday evening, the series of indicative votes failed to gain a majority of MP's support.

The option that came closest to getting a majority was a proposal to keep Britain in a customs union with the EU. That option was defeated by three votes.

A proposal for a confirmatory referendum on any deal got the most votes, but was defeated 292-280.

After the results the Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay made a point of order, saying: "This is now the second time the House has considered a wide variety of options for a way forward.

"It has once again failed to find a clear majority for any of the options."

Jeremy Corbyn said the result was 'disappointing' (PA)

Nicola Sturgeon says she would 'love to see general election' amid Brexit chaos

He added: "And yet the result of the House on Friday not to endorse the withdrawal agreement means that the default legal position is that the UK will leave the EU in just 11 days' time.

"To secure any further extension the Government will have to put forward a credible position to the EU on what we would do with the extra time."

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford said: "It would indeed be an outrage if the Government sought to bring back its deal.

"It really is about time that the Government accepted reality. That the deal the Government put forward has been defeated three times with the largest defeat in parliamentary history.

"I acknowledge I am disappointed that tonight we have not won with revoke, with a people's vote or a customs union."

Ian Blackford said the "day is coming" when Scotland is an independent country (PA)

Blackford added that a "vast majority" of Scottish MPs had voted to revoke Article 50, as well as for a people's vote and to remain part of the single market and customs union.

He said: "It is crystal clear to us in Scotland that our votes in this house are disrespected. It is becoming increasingly clear to the people of Scotland that if we want to secure our future as a European nation, then we are going to have to take our own responsibilities.

"The case is this; sovereignty rests with the people of Scotland, not with this house. The day is coming where we will determine our own future and it will be as an independent country."

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said it was "disappointing" that none of the options had won a majority, but said MPs should have a chance to consider them again on Wednesday.

On Friday, Theresa May lost her latest bid to push through her Brexit deal in the House of Commons, losing by a majority of 58.

286 backed the Tory Prime Minister but 344 MPs voted against her deal.
