MPs burst out laughing in the Commons as Boris Johnson experiences technical issues

MPs burst out laughing in the Commons this afternoon after Boris Johnson experienced technical issues with his video feed.

The Prime Minister appeared over video link from 10 Downing Street to deliver a statement on his Covid winter plan as he isolates.

He outlined plans for a new, 'tougher' three-tiered system when the national lockdown ends on December 2.

After delivering his statement, MPs then put questions to the Prime Minister but the sound was eventually lost on his video link.

There was a ripple of laughter in the Commons from MPs and the house was suspended for three minutes.

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle said: "Have you pressed the button Prime Minister?"

He added: "I think we're just going to have to stop for a moment so we can have it checked...

"We're just checking the sound Prime Minister, we lost your answer. Have you pressed the button by mistake Prime Minister? It's not our end Prime Minister, it could well be yours."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock, seated on the front bench, then took the next questions on behalf of the Prime Minister.

After the video feed encountered problems, shadow health minister Justin Madders tweeted: “Turn it on and off again Boris!”

SNP MP Pete Wishart posted: “Johnson’s been muted. An ancient nation rejoices….”

In his address to the Commons on Monday afternoon, Mr Johnson announced plans for a three-tier system which will come into place at 12.01am on December 2.

He did not reveal which tier Greater Manchester will be in, but will announce which parts of the country will be in which tiers on Thursday.
