MPs block Commons break for Tory conference as Boris Johnson loses 7th vote as PM

MPs have voted to block a Commons break for Tory conference as Boris Johnson loses his 7th vote as Prime Minister.

The Tories had wanted a pause while they hold their annual gathering in Manchester but Labour and Liberal Democrats , who have already held their conferences, refused to back the plan.

Normally there is a longer recess during which all of the parties go off for their meetings.

This time the PM prorogued parliament instead denying MPs the ability to vote against the recess and spend time in parliament rather than on internal party matters.

The Supreme Court annulled the prorogation and parliament returned yesterday.

The Prime Minister lost the latest vote by 289 to 306 with former Tory Amber Rudd understood to have voted against the government.

It is understood that the timetable for Tory conference will be rejigged with the Prime Minister likely to make his speech on Sunday rather than Wednesday as is normal.

Best for Britain chief executive Naomi Smith said in response: “Boris Johnson has lost yet another Commons vote. He truly is a record-breaking PM for all the wrong reasons.

“He and his Government are treating this process as a game, when in reality lives are at stake. Our elected Parliament must be allowed to sit during this time of crisis.

“His language yesterday brought shame on the office of Prime Minister. Instead of trying to get more time off, he should apologise for his actions.”
