MP takes down coronavirus Tier tweet with wrong information

Liam Fox has taken down a tweet saying his constituency entered Tier 2 today (December 17).

The MP for North Somerset announced to his 100.8K Twitter followers that his area had been downgraded to lower measures on Thursday.

Under his post, which has now been deleted after Bristol Live contacted him, Dr Fox shared new Covid rules of which are permitted in the high alert category.

However, all tier changes do not come into force until Saturday (December 19), so anyone following his advice could have been hit with a Covid fine.

A spokesman for Dr Fox said “To be clear the new tier two starts in North Somerset on Saturday at 00:01.

"As Dr Fox said in the House of Commons today he wishes to thank everyone for their hard work and sacrifices, however, we must continue to be vigilant and keep the Covid19 infection rate down especially as we move into the Christmas period”.

The biggest difference between Tier 3 and Tier 2 is that bars, pubs and restaurants can reopen in Tier 2 - as long as anyone attending is having a ‘substantial meal’, with only their household if indoors and adheres to all the previous Covid-safe guidelines.

These include staying at your table, only being in groups of six or less, wearing a mask when moving around, and so on.

In Tier 3, pubs and restaurants remain closed - unless they are selling takeaway food and drink.

Liam Fox's team has now posted a new tweet, saying: "From this Saturday at 00:01 North Somerset will be in Tier 2."
