MP says broadband customers should not be cut off during coronavirus crisis

Broadband providers should freeze prices and keep people connected if they cannot pay bills during the coronavirus crisis.

MP John Nicolson said smooth internet links are essential for home workers and school pupils studying remotely.

Nicolson, the SNP’s digital, culture and media spokesman at Westminster, said: “ Broadband companies must follow the lead of gas and electricity suppliers and set out an emergency package of measures to ensure people are not cut off during this coronavirus crisis for any reason, including being unable to pay bills.

“Broadband may be some children’s only route to education, and some people’s only route to being able to continue to work and earn.”

BT is already giving customers unlimited broadband. Virgin Media are giving pay-monthly customers unlimited minutes to landlines and mobiles, and more date, for no extra cost.

Nicolson represents Ochil and South Perthshire which covers rural communities where residents rely on internet connections.

He said access to different media channels will be the main source of entertainment during harsh self-isolating rules.

“We are all in this together, everyone is pulling their weight and making sacrifices – it is only right that media and internet providers do too,” he said.
