BHOPAL: Tragedy struck a Bhopal family after two minor sisters quarreled over household chores.

The two minor sisters allegedly quarreled over division of household chores between them in Nishatpura locality in the Madhya Pradesh capital on Tuesday afternoon.

Their mother scolded them to do their respective work after which she, along with younger daughter, went out.

The 17-year-old elder sister, upset after the incident, consumed two celphos tablets (poison) and her condition started deteriorating.

Her mother rushed her to hospital for treatment where she died.

Meanwhile, the younger 16-year-old sister, who was left alone at home, consumed two poison tablets and was presently undergoing treatment in critical condition.

She was kept on the ventilator.

Nishatpura police acting on information reached the spot and registered a case.

Investigation officer ASI Chhatrapal Singh said that Hasmukh Verma hails from Sehore and presently resides at Janta Nagar in Karond area in Nishatpura.

He works as a mechanic at a workshop in Kabadkhana.

His family includes his wife, elder daughter Sheetal, 17, a student of class 12, younger daughter Shivani, 16, a student of class 11, and the youngest 12-year-old son.

ASI Singh said that family members told police that both the sisters often quarreled over division of household chores between them.

Their mother counselled them to divide the work turn by turn between them.

ASI Singh said that on Tuesday morning, Hasmukh along with his son went to Sehore to attend the funeral of a relative.

His wife took wheat out of the store and after keeping away the celphos tablets, which were kept with the wheat to safeguard it from insects, she went out to wash the wheat.

Around 9am, both the sisters quarrelled over household work.

When their mother heard the noise, she went inside and scolded them.

Subsequently, she went out and got busy with her work.

ASI Singh said that a few minutes later Sheetal started vomiting.

She revealed to her mother that she had consumed poison.

Her mother immediately rushed her to a private medical college hospital in Karond where she died around 4pm.

ASI Singh said that meanwhile Shivani, who was left alone at home, consumed poison.

When neighbours spotted her condition deteriorating, they rushed her to a private hospital in Shahjehanabad where she was undergoing treatment in critical condition.

The family cremated Sheetal in their native village in Sehore on Wednesday.

Shivani's father Hasmukh was present with her at the hospital while his wife and son were in Sehore.
