MP Lee Anderson says Extinction Rebellion protesters should be 'blasted with water cannons'

MP Lee Anderson has claimed that water cannons should be brought back and used to blast Extinction Rebellion protesters.

Ahead of his trip to London for parliamentary talks Lee Anderson wrote about the demonstrators in his weekly column on Sunday, September 5.

MP Anderson, MP for Ashfield, said that the current way in which protesters are dealt with is "a waste of police time and taxpayer's money."

Rebellion protesters gathered for over a week in London during the end of August in demonstrations that have seen people call for stronger police action.

MP Anderson wrote: "Just last week over 2,000 Police Officers were needed in one day to control the demonstration and over 500 people were arrested.

"What a waste of police time and taxpayer's money to police these protests that achieve nothing apart from damaging property, blocking roads, stopping people going to work and preventing emergency service vehicles getting to their destinations.

"Maybe it's time to bring back water cannons which would help disperse the crowds and give our streets a good clean whilst allowing our Police Officers to get on with the day job."

During a debate at the House of Commons on Wednesday, September 8, MP Anderson called for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to "send migrant boats back to France."
