MP launches petition in battle to make Bramley station safer amid claims of arson, theft and sexual assault

A Leeds MP has ramped up the pressure to install CCTV and improve the lighting at Bramley train station following a spate of crimes.

Last month, Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves wrote a letter urging transport secretary Chris Grayling to implement a number of changes at the station after passengers reported feeling unsafe.

Now, Ms Reeves has kickstarted a petition to hurry along the improvements.

Northern Rail has committed to installing lighting - although no timescale has been put on these works - and there are yet to be any reassurances that CCTV will be installed.

"Bramley station is in urgent need of improvements," the change.org petition by Ms Reeves says.

"I am lobbying local transport leaders and transport secretary Chris Grayling to demand that Bramley station be provided with proper lighting, seating and CCTV - as well as greater modernisation.

"It's simply not good enough that local people are forced to use stations with such poor provision and we need guarantees that action will be taken to make the station better for all."

One person who signed the petition said: "As a user of Bramley station, the lack of adequate lighting is a serious concern."

Another said: "I want to travel in safety."

Between between August 2018 and February 2019, West Yorkshire Police were called to Bramley station on 15 separate occasions to deal with reports of incidents, including theft, arson, criminal damage and sexual assault.
