MP calls for football reform after European Super League shambles

East Runcorn MP Mike Amesbury has called for football refroms in the wake of the European Super League debacle.

Attempts by six Premier League giants including both Manchester clubs, Liverpool and Chelsea to join the breakaway European Super league collapsed after less than a week following a ferocious backlash from fans, pundits, players, rival clubs and Europe’s footballing governing body EUFA.

Lifelong Manchester United fan Mike - whose Weaver Vale constituency covers parts of East Runcorn - wrote to the club’s owners the Glazer family before their U-Turn, urging them to re-think the plans.

Now that the English clubs have all withdrawn the MP said he was 'relieved', but added that there now needs to be radical change to the game that puts the fans at its heart.

He said: “It’s a relief the Super League has been relegated to the dustbin of history thanks to the power of the fans’ voice but there’s unfinished business here.

“This episode has magnified how divorced the greedy football club owners have become from the people who support these teams week in, week out.”

Mike, who was instrumental in bringing the National Football Museum to Manchester during his time on the city’s council, added: “There was contempt for supporters from the outset.

“It has highlighted that reform of the ownership and governance model is vital - and long overdue - as is the need for independent regulation.

“The current system is broken. I support a fans’ ownership model with the fans’ voice centre-stage.”

Despite all six English clubs pulling out, some European clubs such as Real Madrid remain committed to the ESL model.
