MP Bridget Phillipson under fire for criticising Brexit deal despite Sunderland voting leave

North East MP Bridget Phillipson put Sunderland in the spotlight when she spoke out about Brexit on BBC Two's Politics Live show.

She said: "What matters is the impact this will have on people's lives. I'm far less interested in what this means in the Westminster gossip of things."

And the Houghton and Sunderland South Labour MP went on to slam Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Brexit deal ahead of Saturday's vote , saying: "What impact will this have on jobs, on industry and on places like Sunderland. We will be hit the hardest by this deal.

"It's a terrible deal. It's even worse than Theresa May's deal. And we will see long term damage to the country. That's just not something I'm prepared to support."

She won praise from many viewers - especially when she faced criticism from a fellow guest, businessman Richard Tice, of the Brexit Party.

One viewer said on Twitter : "So much respect for Bridget Phillipson. A Labour MP with real principles, which can't be said of all her colleagues in her neck of the woods."

Another said: "Bridget Phillipson calm and measured despite the usual haranguing and insults from the Brexit party representative."

And one said: "Bridget Phillipson is consistently so impressive, a timely reminder of how many brilliant MPs the Labour Party still has."

But some accused her of ignoring the wishes of constituents. Sunderland voted for Brexit by 61% to 39% in the 2016 referendum.

One viewer said: "So Bridget Phillipson is another MP who is happy to disregard the vote of her constituents because she doesn't want to leave the EU.

"So is she in a roundabout way saying she knows best and her constituents don't know what is best for them. (Nanny State at its best)".

Who is Bridget Phillipson?

Bridget Phillipson was elected at the 2010 general election as the Labour MP for Houghton and Sunderland South.

Between 2007 and 2010, she was a manager for Wearside Women in Need, a charity refuge for women affected by domestic violence.

In the 2016 European Referendum, she campaigned for a Remain vote, and in 2018 was one of the first Labour MPs to call for a People's Vote on any eventual deal.
