MP asked to leave Tory conference in Manchester following 'unacceptable' bust-up with security

The Conservatives have said a senior MP has been asked to leave the party's conference in Manchester following a 'totally unacceptable' incident involving a clash with security staff.

A Tory spokesman said Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown attempted to bring someone into the International Lounge at Manchester Central.

The person did not have the relevant pass.

They were stopped by a member of staff, Press Association reports, before Sir Geoffrey remonstrated with them.

Security staff then intervened, before police were called.

A Conservative Party spokesman said: "The incident was totally unacceptable.

"Geoffrey has been asked to leave Conference and we are establishing all of the facts to see if further action is necessary.

"We will always adopt a zero tolerance approach to any inappropriate behaviour towards our hardworking staff."

Officers were seen at the door to the lounge as members of the press were ushered away.

A statement released by Greater Manchester Police read: "At around 1.45pm on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, an attendee to the Conservative Party Conference attempted to enter the International Lounge area of the conference without the relevant pass.

"Security staff intervened and resolved the situation without any breach of security occurring."

Earlier, Sir Geoffrey told PA: "I've got nothing further to say about it.

"I don't want to comment on it, really."
