Moy Riverside Walk opens to the public as part of Mid Ulster £700,000 investment plans

The new riverside walk in Moy has opened to the public as part of an investment programme in the Mid Ulster area.

The EU Peace IV-funded ‘Shared Space’ project was established in February to bring about the transformation of civic spaces in Aughnacloy, Castledawson, Donaghmore, Draperstown, Moneymore and Moy.

In Moy, the project aimed to enhance walks along the riverside, with new works including landscaping and a new ‘hexapath’ grass pathway which will be lit.

The new riverside walk is also a great place to spot some diverse species, with signs pointing out that Kingfishers, Daubenton's bats, and otters are amongst those frequenting the area.

Facilities include two lifebuoys, lighting, and 'leave no trace' bins (Conal Ó hÁdhmaill/Facebook)

The project in Donaghmore included a facelift to the existing riverside walk, as well as the planting of a new sensory garden and lighting. In Aughnacloy, developments include the enhancement of the playing fields with a new play park.

Each of the projects have been developed with and by local people, to ensure that they're community spaces that are needed and will be valued.

The contractor charged with delivering the programme across Mid Ulster was Stewartstown based MP Coleman.

Speaking in February ahead of the works starting, the now former Chair of the Council, Councillor Cathal Mallaghan, said: "One of the three key priorities for delivery under the PEACE IV programme is shared spaces and services, which in essence is all about creating places in our communities which can be enjoyed by everyone and help to contribute to a greater sense of community spirit and cohesion.

"These projects show those ideas in action and have all been developed with and by local people. It’s a real pleasure to see 6 of our villages benefit from this extensive investment via the PEACE programme."
