Even if you aren’t looking for Moxy Downtown Portland, it’s impossible to miss. Opened on February 27, the new hotel on the bustling corner of SW 10th Avenue and SW Alder Street in Downtown’s West End – nearby some of Portland’s best eating and shopping, including Powell's City of Books, Nong's Khao Man Gai, and Frances May – is decked out with a huge neon sign in Moxy’s signature hot pink and oversized floor-to-ceiling windows giving passerbys a glimpse into Bar Moxy.
Anchoring every Moxy Hotel, Bar Moxy replaces the traditional reception desk and lobby with a welcoming, multitasking space that represents what the hotel brand by Marriott is all about: fun, stylish, and unexpected experiences that won’t break the bank.
For starters: it’s where you’ll be warmly greeted upon checking in and checking out. To kick off your stay, you’ll be treated to a complimentary signature Got Moxy cocktail, a zippy blend of Bacardi Dragonberry Rum, black cherry puree, and fresh lime. And whether you’re in the mood to work or play, there’s plenty of space (and complimentary speedy WiFi) to plug in or unwind (think board games, art installations, and fireplace).
To curb your cravings, Bar Moxy features an all-day food and drink menu with everything gently priced under $13. Though the offerings are a bit limited, they’re quick, satisfying, and cover you breakfast to late-night (think sausage and egg biscuits, macaroni and cheese, and pepperoni and cheese-topped naan). There’s also a grab-and-go section of pre-packaged snacks and beverages, and more thoughtfully, a self-service nook stocked with a microwave, toaster, purified water dispenser, and utensils. Later this summer, guests can look forward to more dining options with the highly anticipated Food Cart Alley, a cluster of local food trucks.
Here’s the thing about the 197 rooms. While they do run snug – my Corner King, for example, clocked in at 205 square feet – they’re smartly designed and use every inch well. So instead of a closet: you’ll discover plenty of hooks to hang your clothes, and storage under your bed to stow away your luggage. The bathroom, too, is efficiently configured with pegs, and ample space to lay out your toiletries. As for the design, it’s colorful and super cozy with muted tones, quirky art, and a chicly-dressed bed – so it won’t take long for you to make the hotel your home away form home.
Despite being a budget-minded property, Moxy Downtown Portland sports a sleek fitness center rivaling its downtown neighbors. Located in the basement, it’s got everything you need to break a sweat: an Everlast punching bag with boxing gloves in Moxy’s signature pink, free weights, Life Fitness treadmills, and a Peloton bike. A water refilling station and towels keep you hydrated and comfortable, while motivational phrases on the wall push your workout to the next level.
In short: the Moxy brand might be geared towards the millennial customer (which I’m definitely not), but the reality is it’s a smart choice for anyone visiting Portland seeking a highly social, safe, and affordable stay in a convenient location.
