Mowgli founder Nisha Katona issues urgent plea to diners

Mowgli founder Nisha Katona has urged customers to turn up if they book after revealing the popular chain has hundreds of no shows a night.

The Liverpool-based chef shared her message days after Mowgli reopened its restaurants in the city with bookings open.

Restaurant boss Ms Katona, who has 11 outlets, tweeted: "For the sake of the restaurants you love please No More No Shows.

"Across Mowgli we have around 200 No Shows PER NIGHT.

"We paid rent without income. We have honoured our staff - we are on our knees in hospitality in every way begging you no more no shows.

"Help the high street recover."

Many customers replied sharing their support, with one saying: "It's a complete lack of courtesy in 'normal' times, it's just plain disrespectful in times like this."

And another urged Ms Katona to charge a non-refundable deposit, saying: "Genuine customers will not mind."

The hospitality industry was temporarily shut down when the coronavirus hit and in the months since, many businesses switched to takeaway and collection .

While venues were allowed to reopen from July 4, many chose to delay plans in order to miss the rush of customers, or make changes in order to adhere to Government guidelines.

Speaking ahead of the relaxation of lockdown, Ms Katona said restaurants would be able to enforce rules to make sure people did not gather in large groups.

She told BBC Breakfast : "People are doing that on hill-sides, people are doing that on the beaches in a completely crazy way that has been making the headlines.

"Bring that body of people to us and we can shepherd them through this in a Covid secure way and it's those guidelines we need to work collaboratively with government to avoid a second peak, that would be the end of the hospitality industry."
