Moving in Edinburgh during the coronavirus pandemic: Everything we know so far

Since the Coronavirus pandemic was announced, life, as we know it, has completely changed.

Work isn't how it used to be, we can no longer drop in to see friends and family and shopping is the most complicated task of the week.

But what about moving? Are you still allowed to move? Can you get a removal van right now?

Here is everything we know so far:

Am I allowed to move?

According to the Scottish Government, you should do everything you can to either not move, or delay your move while stay-at-home measures are in place.

If you have not yet agreed a set entry date to move into your house, then you should wait until lockdown measures have been lifted as they could be extended at any point.

If you already have an agreed move-in date, the Scottish Government say that you should "seek to delay that date with agreement from the other people involved in the transaction."

You should always seek legal advice from your solicitor when considering shifting a move-in date.

What if you have to move?

There will, of course, be people who are in a situation where they have to move. Perhaps the house is no longer suitable due to medical issues, or you may even be left without anywhere to go if you don't move.

For those who have to move, the advice is that you do not involve anyone who is not from your household in the moving process and that you adhere to social distancing measures at all times.

The property which you are moving in to must also be empty as you can't come in to contact with anyone.

Can you hire a removal van?

If you do find yourself in a situation that you have to move during the pandemic, the removal process is going to be a little more complicated than usual.

As you are not allowed to hire a removal service, as this would put you in contact with a worker, you will need to hire a removal van yourself.

Enterprise in Edinburgh is still offering van rental, however, they have changed the process to maintain social distancing measures.

Enterprise is now incorporating contactless kerbside hires and including a deep clean of the vehicle in the hire price.

What about my mortgage?

The Scottish Government has assured the public that UK Finance will support customers who have mortgages agreements that have a set date of completion.

Mortgage lenders should be working with customers to find ways to have their mortgage extended by up to three months during this period.

Can you still sell your home?

Perhaps you still want to sell your home during the coronavirus pandemic, and while in theory you still can, it is a lot more complicated.

While you are still free to list your property, you cannot accept any viewings. Any viewings that are conducted, must be virtual.

You are allowed to accept house offers, however, you must be aware that the selling process is likely to take much longer than usual.
