YOKOHAMA -- An event featuring a full-scale Gundam robot opens in Yokohama on Saturday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of when the Japanese anime series "Mobile Suit Gundam" first aired.

"Moving Gundam," which is about 18 meters tall, will be unveiled to the public at the Gundam Factory Yokohama event at Yamashita Pier. The Gundam is able to move its head, both its arms and legs, as well as its fingers. By climbing up the nearby Gundam Dock Tower, visitors can view the massive robot up close.

"I want guests to take a good look at its face as well," said Masaki Kawahara, a creative director who took charge of designing the replica.

The event venue also includes the Gundam Lab where visitors can have a simulated experience of entering a Gundam's cockpit and purchase limited-edition goods.

Tickets can be purchased from the event's official website. An additional fee is required to enter the Gundam Dock Tower.

The event will continue through March 31, 2022. The Yomiuri Shimbun is a media partner for the event.
