Movilla High School ‘no longer marked for closure’

A Co Down school that had been earmarked for closure says the plans have been shelved.

Movilla High School in Newtownards was part of a proposed shake-up in the wider area which would result in its closure by 2024.

However, the school claimed on Monday night that a letter from the Education Authority offered a reprieve.

The school said on its Facebook page: “The Principal has just received a letter from the Education Authority which states that: 'In response to changes in circumstances at Movilla High School, the school is no longer included within the proposals being brought forward to the Education Committee for approval'.

“This means the proposals to close the school have been shelved. Such great news and the whole school community are really delighted!

“A huge big thank you to all our entire school community of pupils, parents, staff, and Governors. Our local politicians and elected representatives, the community support of so many external organisations, the business community, Controlled Secondary Schools Council, Ards and North Down Borough Council, Ards Presbytery and the support of all our local churches.

“A wonderful start to the new academic year!”

An Education Authority spokesperson said: "A paper outlining the Education Authority’s short, medium and long term strategic vision for controlled, non selective, post-primary provision within Ards and North Down will be considered by our Education Committee at their September meeting.

"The paper takes account of the changing circumstances of Movilla High School and addresses the increasing demand for admission to post-primary settings within the area."
