Move over Storm Ciara: Dennis to batter Glasgow this weekend with heavy rain and gales

Just when you thought you'd seen the last of the terrible weather with Storm Ciara , get ready for Storm Dennis which is closing in on the UK.

Severe weather warnings remain in place until noon tomorrow (Wednesday) with the Met Office predicting wind, snow and ice for Glasgow.

The city is still recovering after Storm Ciara brought strong winds, heavy rain and even thundersnow to Glasgow yesterday, leading to police issuing a travel warning for high risk travel disruption and local councils warning of flooding dangers.

Train services were halted and Easy Jet flights from Glasgow Airport were cancelled as the storm swept through the city yesterday.

Weather warnings were issued for wind and rain, and Glaswegians described seeing 'four seasons in one day’ with snow, sunshine and hailstones arriving in quick succession throughout the day.

But if you thought things were about to return to normal anytime soon...we're afraid we have some bad news.

While Scottish Fire Service tweeted that 'Storm Ciara has passed' earlier today, forecasters have warned that the next named storm, to be known as ‘Storm Dennis’, is set to hit Scotland this Saturday.

Steve Ramsdale, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office said: “Another spell of very wet and windy weather is expected for Saturday, although Storm Dennis is currently not expected to be as severe as Ciara disruption is still likely."

Over the weekend wind gusts will widely reach in excess of 50mph, even across some inland areas, with gusts of over 60mph possible over hills, coastal areas and exposed locations. While these winds have the potential to bring impacts they are not as strong as the gusts we saw last weekend with Storm Ciara when a gust of 97mph was recorded on the Isle of Wight.

Forecasters added that heavy rain is also expected with the storm and with ground already saturated there is a risk of further flooding.

And with the warning comes a risk of major disruption, including delays and cancellations to transport services, damage to power supplies and large coastal waves.
