Move over Santa's helpers: East Kilbride firefighters donate sackful of toys to Christmas Kindness campaign

Move over Santa’s helpers – East Kilbride firefighters donated a sackful of children’s toys to the EK Christmas Kindness campaign.

The toys, worth hundreds of pounds, will make sure no child is left empty-handed on the day itself.

Launched recently, the campaign aims to get locals to pledge to buy a gift for a child or person who is on their own.

Spearheaded by Share Alike, it also involves EK East Kilbride, Morrisons Lindsayfield, Beat the Street, East Kilbride Rotary, Urquhart Travel and Take 5.

EK East Kilbride and Morrisons Lindsayfield and Stewartfield both have a Kindness Tree, where members of the community can choose a tag with basic details to help in gift choice and donate at allocated drop-off points with the tag attached.

The last date for drop-off at EK East Kilbride customer services has been extended to Friday, December 18.

The team at Share Alike will then collect the gifts for children living in poverty, those living alone or who are estranged from family/friends due to COVID.

The campaign has been inundated with support and the kind-hearted firefighters are the latest to support it.

Annmarie Campbell from Share Alike said: “We have to say a big thank you to the fab crew at East Kilbride fire station.

“Not content with keeping us all safe they have made this huge contribution to our East Kilbride Christmas Kindness campaign.

“There are so many fantastic gifts ready to go out to children in East Kilbride. Special thank you to Kirsty McSeveny for doing all the organising.”

Morrisons Lindsayfield and Stewartfield have also recently made much-needed donations of food and surplus produce to the campaign.

And in recognition of Share Alike’s wider work in community through the pandemic MP Dr Lisa Cameron has submitted an Early Day Motion to parliament highlighting their contributions including providing emergency food packs as well as period poverty, new baby and mother, mental health and new home starter packs.
