The move-in dates for condominium buyers at Harumi Flag in Chuo Ward, Tokyo, which is scheduled to serve as the athletes village for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, will be delayed by about a year due to the postponement of the Games, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

Businesses comprising 11 major companies including Mitsui Fudosan Residential Co., have begun contacting prospective tenants.

In the athletes village area, accommodation facilities will be refurbished after being used by the athletes during the Tokyo games, and schools and commercial facilities will be built in the vicinity, eventually housing about 12,000 people. Occupancy of 5,600 units in 23 buildings was scheduled to begin in March 2023, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the competition was postponed until next summer.

According to the condominium operator, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government notified it this month that the government intends to use the complex for the postponed Games. The move-in dates are expected to be delayed by about a year as well, and businesses began explaining the situation to the buyers of 940 of the units.

The operator confirmed that buyers still intend to honor their agreements and asked them to decide whether they want to continue by the end of the year. In addition, they explained that when a contract is cancelled, the deposit will be returned, according to a buyer who was contacted.

The municipal government in Chuo Ward rescheduled the opening of the elementary and junior high schools in the Harumi Flag area from the spring of 2023 to the following year.

"I was planning to have my daughter start elementary school as a first-grader in 2023, but my plans are thrown off," said a male company employee, 39, who signed a contract for a three-bedroom apartment last August and received a notice of postponement of his move-in date from the real estate company on Saturday. "I will check the terms and conditions of the contract, including compensation, and rethink whether to continue with the contract."
