Move for new Thai restaurant on Byres Road rejected

Proposals for a new Thai restaurant on Byres Road have been rejected by Glasgow City Council.

Ting Thai Caravan, who already operate venues in Edinburgh, had submitted an application to move into the iconic home of Fopp at 358 Byres Road.

However, planners have rejected the move citing "an unacceptable loss of a Class 1 retail unit, to the detriment of the retail character and retail function of the Partick/Byres Road Major Town Centre."

Meanwhile, the decision also refers to "failure to maintain an appropriate balance and diversity of uses" in the area "thereby detracting from the vitality and viability of the Town Centre."

Furthermore, it was felt the proposed shopfront would not be in keeping with the "character" of the Glasgow West Conservation Area.

The planning application for the new restaurant stated the new Thai eatery could be part of a series of social and party hubs on Byres Road.

It said: "In proposing this change of use we are mindful of the recently approved application for a series of entertainment/eating establishments in the vacant Arnold Clark building round the corner in Vinicombe Street.

"This will create a social hub at the northern end of Byres Road to add to the other social zones on Byres Road, one at Ashton Lane, one at the junction of Byres Road and University Avenue and another at the junction Of Byres Road and Dumbarton Road.

"The net effect of these hubs is to punctuate Byres Road with a series of 'event' areas where particular services and facilities are concentrated."

The statement went on to praise the quality of the incoming restaurant, adding: "The proposed development will see the retail unit transformed into a quality restaurant. The proposed restauranteur is an international renowned Thai outlet who will bring a new dining experience to the area."

According to reGlasgow, Fopp has been on the market since last summer having experienced a troubled year after problems at HMV.
