Mouswald quilter creates patch to represent Dumfriesshire in Parliamentary Covid Memorial Quilt

Mouswald quilter Ann Hill has put her talents to use by creating a six by six inch square patch to represent Dumfriesshire in an unusual UK-wide Covid-19 memorial.

The Parliamentary Covid Memorial Quilt, which goes on display later this year, will be a lasting tribute to those who died as a result of the pandemic and an acknowledgement of the dedicated contribution by so many front-line workers.

And the patch from Dumfriesshire, lovingly created by Ann, includes belted Galloway cattle, thistles, sheep and rolling hills.

Ann, who was awarded the BEM for her quilting prowess and services to charities, said she was “only too happy to help” after being asked for advice by Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell.

He was invited to contribute to the patchwork quilt wall hanging – a cross-party initiative led by London Brent Central MP Dawn Butler and supported by the Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle – along with other MPs, peers and staff at the Palace of Westminster which lost four popular members of staff to the pandemic.

Mr Mundell said: “I was delighted when Ann volunteered to use her skills to complete a patch based on some of my off-duty lockdown memories of taking regular walks in the Moffat Hills near my home.

"She has done a remarkable job and the patch’s hills, belties and thistles reflect how the countryside and outdoors brought a great deal of solace and comfort to many people in the constituency in what was an uncertain and difficult time.”

During lockdowns, Ann’s self-isolating quilting group across the region made and gave out 650 morale-boosting quilts, many featuring farming and other rural scenes, to people living alone.
