It may not be his natural position, but Moussa Sissoko admits he was happy to do his bit for the team after playing at right-back for Tottenham against Southampton.
The Frenchman was asked to play out of position at full-back after Serge Aurier was sent off just after the half hour mark against Southampton on Saturday, with Spurs forced into a reshuffle as a result.
But while it is not a position that the 30-year-old is particularly used to playing, he said he was satisfied with his performance as he helped to keep the Saints at bay in the second half as the visitors went in search of an equaliser.
“Everyone knows it is not my position, but I need to fight for the team and I had to play in that position," Sissoko said.
“I tried to do my best to help the team, and I think everything worked well for us.
“I am happy with my performance, even if it wasn’t my position, but I had to do it for the team and I am happy with that."
Meanwhile, the Frenchman was full of praise for his team-mates for how they soaked up the pressure against Southampton as they dealt with the setbacks of being reduced to ten men, and conceding a bizarre goal after Hugo Lloris' howler that gifted Danny Ings a soft equaliser.
And Sissoko felt that the Lilywhites showed great character to overcome such issues, particularly after a difficult run of results in recent weeks, which included defeat against Leicester City and the exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of League Two side Colchester United.
“We fought until the end with one man down, which is not easy, particularly in the Premier League," he said.
“But we did it, and we did it well, so congratulations to the whole team, and we can be happy with that win.
“But now we have to recover well and be ready to go again on Tuesday [against Bayern Munich]."
