Moussa Sissoko didn't know Tottenham had beaten Man City in Champions League epic

Tottenham Hotspur’s epic Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester City left midfielder Moussa Sissoko confused - because he didn’t know they had won the tie!

Spurs were beaten 4-3 on the night but claimed an aggregate victory on away goals, having won the first leg 1-0 the previous week on home soil.

Sissoko started at the Etihad on Wednesday night, but a first-half injury ended his participation before the break.

As such, the French international could only watch on during the second half, as tension rose in the all-English clash.

And when Raheem Sterling thought he had booked City a spot in the last four by turning past Hugo Lloris in injury time and sending the home crowd into raptures, it was too much for Sissoko.

At that point, he returned to the dressing room, alone, believing Spurs’ European adventure had been ended - not realising that VAR had intervened, adjudging Sergio Aguero offside in the build up.

Son Heung-min's three-word response perfectly sums up Man City vs Spurs

"I was on the bench when I saw the goal that made it 5-3," Sissoko told French sports newspaper L'Equipe.

"I was so upset that I returned directly to the dressing room.

"I was alone, no one had accompanied me, no TV screen was broadcasting the game. In my head we were eliminated.

"Then one of the staff members entered the dressing room and told me: 'Incredible, we did it!'.

"I said: 'How did we do it?' At that moment, he told me that the goal had been disallowed.

"So I put on a t-shirt, I forgot about my injury and I ran outside to join the others, not to miss the celebrations for such a historic moment. It was an incredible, emotional shock."

Tottenham will now face Dutch side Ajax in the semi-finals, with the first leg at White Hart Lane on April 30.

The return leg takes place on May 8.
