Moussa Sissoko absence explained as Watford move nears for Tottenham midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with Watford over a permanent move for Moussa Sissoko with a confidence that the transfer will happen.

The 32-year-old joined Spurs from Newcastle United as their £30m club record signing in 2016 but struggled in his first few years at the club.

Then the France international became a key first team player under Mauricio Pochettino and was one of their mainstays in their run to the Champions League final in the 2018/19 season.

Sissoko was rewarded with a new contract that year, three years with an option for a fourth, a rarity for a player in their thirties at Tottenham.

However, the midfielder found himself unable to become a regular under Jose Mourinho and with the return of talented young midfielder Oliver Skipp from loan at Norwich, Sissoko was told that he could leave the club this summer.

Sissoko was an unused substitute on the bench for the opening match against Manchester City but has been left out of each of the subsequent matchday squads by Nuno Espirito Santo.

It has taken some time to find a move for the Frenchman but now a switch to Hertfordshire is in the reckoning.

football.london understands that there is a confidence from both sides that a switch to Watford will happen as talks continue between the clubs.

It will bring an end to a five-year spell in north London after 202 matches for Sissoko and Tottenham are also looking to aid Serge Aurier in his desire to leave the club before the end of the transfer window.

First team regulars Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela have already left the club this summer as well as goalkeeper Joe Hart.
