Moussa Dembele shuts up loudmouth critic as Manchester United transfer target delivers perfect response

In-demand Moussa Dembele sent a firm message to his detractors as he netted twice for Lyon against derby rivals St Etienne.

The 23-year-old striker scored both goals in the 2-0 win to fire his side up into fifth place in Ligue 1 to further boost their chances of a place in next season's Champions League.

Dembele is a wanted man with Manchester United leading the race for his signature ahead of the summer transfer window.

Lyon chief Jean-Michel Aulas has made it clear he could be willing to do business and reportedly is looking for around £84m for the third top-scorer in France with 16 league goals.

But Dembele's latest derby heroics - something he became accustomed to with Celtic - comes days after he was slaughtered live on TV by outspoken pundit Bruno Irles before the striker played a pivotal role in the 1-0 win over Juventus.

Irles, a former Monaco player, sneered: "We do not see a big strength that means he can aspire to an international level.

"He's not quick enough for the top level. In terms of explosiveness, and also in the way he dribbles, he's not at that top level."

The race to land Dembele is only set to intensify with Celtic in line for a payday due to the significant sell-on fee they inserted before his £19.8m move to Lyon in 2018 was rubber-stamped.

The likes of Chelsea and Tottenham are known admirers of the former Fulham man who is understood to be keen on a return to the English Premier League.
