Moussa Dembele's Man Utd transfer stance after Champions League blow for Lyon

Moussa Dembele would find it difficult to turn down the chance to sign for Manchester United this summer, according to reports.

And the prospect of the 23-year-old Lyon striker heading to Old Trafford may have been boosted by the fact that his current club won't be in the Champions League next season.

United were linked with Dembele in the January transfer window, but instead signed Odion Ighalo on loan from Shanghai Shenhua until the end of the season.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to be in the market for a forward again this summer, although United may choose to sign Ighalo on a permanent deal.

However, Dembele is viewed as the perfect age for the profile of signing United are targeting, and having scored 22 goals in all competitions for Lyon this term, he would add plenty of firepower to Solskjaer's side.

Sources close to the player are impressed by the prospect of potentially playing for United, according to the Manchester Evening News.

And there is potentially also be the added lure of playing in the Champions League next season, if United can ensure qualification.

The Red Devils were fifth in the Premier League when the season was halted due to coronavirus - and that would be enough to secure a Champions League spot unless Manchester City were successful in overturning a two-year ban from European football.

June 12 is the new target for the resumption of the Premier League campaign, but it unclear as yet whether this will happen, with players wanting assurances over their safety.

Dembele's current club Lyon have threatened legal action after they missed out on the European spots when Ligue 1 bosses decided to end the season.

Rudi Garcia's side finished seventh after the campaign was cut short by 12 fixtures because of the coronavirus pandemic.

United are also considering a move for RB Leipzig hotshot Timo Werner - and the £50million striker has admitted he would rather move abroad than sign for Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.
