Moussa Dembele branded Atletico Madrid 'ghost signing' as Celtic icon aims to silence critics against Chelsea

Celtic hero Moussa Dembele has suffered an unfortunate nickname in the build-up to Atletico Madrid's crunch Champions League last 16 clash with Chelsea.

Spanish daily Marca branded him the club's "ghost signing" in the build-up to the Chelsea duel after a series of unfortunate events that delayed his debut for the mattress makers.

Dembele sealed his loan move from Lyon while nursing an arm injury and would go onto miss another three games after testing positive for Covid.

But he made his bow in Saturday's shock 2-0 defeat to Levante that sees Atleti's lead at the top of La Liga now sit at a mere three points over Real with a game in hand.

The former Hoops goal machine starts on the bench for Diego Simeone tonight in the pivotal Champions League showdown.

Joao Felix and Luis Suarez lead the line but Dembele will likely be called upon and has a history of scoring big goals in this tournament as Manchester City know only too well.

Atletico have an option to secure a permanent £32m deal in the summer if he impresses during the final months of what could be an historic season.

Celtic will be hoping their former star produces the goods as they retain a 10 per cent sell-on fee for a player who was a smash-hit during his trophy-laden two-year stay in Glasgow.
