Mournes Mountain fires: Young boy gets trip out after raising over £4k to support services tackling blaze

A young boy who raised thousands for emergency services tackling the Mournes fires has been rewarded with a fun and educational trip out.

Charlie Thompson raised over £4,000 to support the firefighters and emergency colleagues who tackled the fires in the Mournes in April.

Around 3.5 square kilometres of land was destroyed around the lower slopes of Donard, at Millstone and Thomas’s Mountain, in the fire that started on April, 23.

The NIFRS said the cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate.

The fire service received support from a huge list of other services, including HM Coastguard, the Irish Coastguard, Mourne Mountain Rescue, Mourne Heritage Trust and so many more.

Another service that was involved in the response was the NI Police Search and Rescue Team. And upon hearing of Charlie's efforts, members of the team were "delighted" to give something back to the young boy who did "so much" for the emergency services community during the major incident.

The Police Service Search and Rescue team said: "Earlier this week we highlighted the multi-agency response to the fires in the Mournes.

"During that really challenging time, a young boy called Charlie Thompson raised over £4,000 to support the firefighters and emergency colleagues.

"To say thank you we invited Charlie and his family to spend some time with our police Search and Rescue Team.

"Thank you Charlie!"

A video posted on social media showed Charlie looking on top of the world as he ventured up mountains, learning how the rescue team save people's lives in emergency situations.

A comment from one member of the public said: "This so comforting to know that there are also kids like this one...

"Well done to him and his parents for rising a role model kid!"
