Mourners line the streets to say goodbye to Consett teenager Lucy Candlish

Mourners lined the streets to pay their respects to 19-year-old Lucy Candlish after her tragic death.

The funeral of the teenager took place today, and family and friends gathered as the cortege passed through Blackhill, Consett.

Mourners bid a final farewell to Lucy, who was placed inside a pink coffin and roadside well-wishers also wore pink in memory of the 19-year-old.

As the funeral procession made its way towards St Mary's Church, there was a poignant moment when pink and white flowers were thrown on top of the white horse-drawn carriage as it passed slowly down Durham Road.

The cortege stopped outside St Mary's Church, where hundreds had also gathered to say goodbye and lay flowers.

The coffin was carried inside the church to the sounds of 'Angel' by Katherine Jenkins and Ruth B's 'Lost Boy' was played as the service concluded.

Earlier this month, the K2 and The Union Bar in Consett, one of Lucy's favourite drinking spots, Durham Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge in Gateshead were all lit up pink in her memory.

The heartbroken Candlish family formed a mental health charity to honour the County Durham teenager, who took her own life earlier this month.

Lucy was discovered in a wooded area in Consett on February 3 after leaving her family home three days earlier.

Following Lucy's death, her dad Ian, mum Melanie, and family, of Blackhill, announced they will do everything they can to help reduce the suicide rate among young people.

The family have launched the Lucy's Legacy charity to support 18-25 year olds in crisis through a buddy volunteer service.

Melanie said her daughter's selfless attitude and kindness had a lasting effect on everyone she knew.
